Corporate income tax in Malaysia runs on a Self-Assessment System. A private limited company (Sdn. Bhd.) must file its Form C within 7 months of the end of the financial year, and pay tax in monthly instalments across the year of assessment (CP204). Planning the filing timetable early is the most effective way to avoid penalties.
For SMEs operating in Malaysia, income tax filing is not a once-a-year exercise. It runs on a calendar that spans the whole year. Below are the points that matter most for corporate income tax filing in 2026.
Key filing dates
- Form C (corporate income tax return): due within 7 months of the end of the financial year. A company with a December year end must therefore file by 31 July of the following year.
- CP204 (tax estimate): a new company submits its estimate within 3 months of starting operations. An existing company submits before the financial year begins, then pays in monthly instalments across the year.
- CP204A (revised estimate): the estimate may be revised in the 6th and 9th months of the financial year, which avoids penalty interest on instalments that fall short.
- Employer filings: the Form E and employees' EA forms, which must be completed by the end of March each year.
Common compliance risks
- Under-estimating the tax: if the actual tax payable exceeds the estimate by 30%, a penalty is charged on the excess, so estimate conservatively.
- Filing the Form C late: LHDN may impose a penalty based on the tax payable, and the longer the delay the heavier it gets.
- Misreading what is deductible: not every expense is deductible. Capital expenditure and business entertainment, among others, must be treated as the rules require.
In addition, the first RM600,000 of an SME's chargeable income is normally taxed at a lower rate, with the balance at the standard rate. The actual rates and thresholds are subject to the latest LHDN rules.
