A CIDB licence is the mandatory contractor registration issued by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). Every contractor carrying out construction work in Malaysia must be registered and hold a valid licence before it can lawfully take on and carry out a project. Construction personnel must also be registered with CIDB.
Under Malaysian law, carrying out construction work without a valid CIDB licence is an offence and may result in fines or even a stop-work order. The licence is also one of the basic requirements for tendering for government and major private construction projects.
Licence grades and application requirements
CIDB contractor registration is divided into several grades according to project scale, and each grade sets the maximum contract value the contractor can tender for, known as its tendering capacity. Applicants must submit their company registration documents, evidence of financial standing and proof of their technical staff's qualifications. CIDB assesses the company's capital, experience and technical staff together.
Licence validity and renewal
- The licence generally needs to be renewed periodically, and if it is not renewed in time the company cannot take on new projects
- Any change to the company's structure or directors must also be updated in its CIDB registration record
- Technical staff must keep their qualifications valid for the company to keep its licence grade
We help construction and engineering businesses with CIDB licence applications, renewals and grade upgrades, handling the paperwork and compliance steps so you can concentrate on the project itself.
